This church is on a hill
that dominates the Podil and Dnipro valley. It was build in the
honor of Andrew the First-Called, and it towers above the city.
The designer was Bartolommeo Francesco
Rastrelli. He visited Kiev many times to watch over the
construction. The Moscow engineer I. Michurin built both this church
and the Tsar's Palace in Lysky.
The foundation of the church was actually
started by the Empress Elizaveta Petrivna, in 1744. Her monogram can
be seen on the pediments. The church was planned to be an
ensemble with the Tsar's Palace in Lypsky.
The plan of the church is in the Latin
(Andriivsky) cross.
The total height of the church is 46
meters, and overall, including the pedestal, or base, stylobate,
which is a two floor residence for the priests, is 60 meters.
